MLK Comments

Here are some of the responses to my recent MLK email

From Renee:
I was in college. We were not "taught" about his work, but it was very
prevalent on the newscasts - we saw the marches and heard the speeches
(parts thereof). The whole time was one of upheaval with the war and the
Civil Rights movement, when my generation was trying to make the country
more responsive to what we saw as things that needed to be corrected -
quickly. MLK became the face of "what should be done" in a singular manner.
There were many others (fortunately) who were speaking out but he was pretty
much the prime mover with the greatest following.

From Annie:
I was in college when he assasinated. It was if all our heroes were being shot - JFK, Robert, then Martin. It was a terrible blow for me, because they had ideals and were inspring to me. MLK had many death threats during his years of activism. I don't think any of us white folk know what that is like and what the challenges he faced and withstood. I'm glad Stevie Wonder pushed to have a national holiday for him aand what he stood for.

From Bob and Brenda (mostly Brenda):
Having school age childern who spent alot of time hearing about M.L.K., esp. during black history month, ( Feb) .I can't say for sure if his assination increased his popularity or not. But having lived trough his time I learned much more about him helping with their homework. He indeed was a great leader as were many other leaders in history (not so studied about). I suppose we will never know of all that he could have accomplished had he not been assissanated. Nor the dirt that would have been dug up on him as in all of politics these days. I feel that his assissination def lead to his fame because we forget to celebrate people who are living. Had he died a natural death his claim to fame would not have been as great because he would not have been considered to have died for his cause. Too bad we can't get more government holidays for the rest of the great leaders of our country! Guess who I work f or!!!!
